Otherwise known as a white crowned pionus. These birds are native to Mexico, Central, and South America. They are similar in characteristic as the Amazon Parrots, but smaller.

This particular family of birds which includes many varieties such as blue headed, bronze winged, speckled face, dusky, red bill.  The pionus has a particular odor to them, similar to the amazon parrot. 


According to bird forums and breeder forums these birds have not been in captivity for a long time. Unlike some of your other common companion birds, some say they have only been in captivity for only a couple of decades or so.

These particular parrots are great for apartment dwellers, or those who own a condo. They are fairly quiet, and very laid back birds.  With training the pionus parrot talks

How to determine if this bird is right for you. Please do your research on any bird you decide to purchase or adopt. These are companions that may out live you. So you want to be sure that the bird of your choosing is the right match for you and your lifestyle.

A pionus is pretty good for couch potatoes. This bird does not require as much interaction as some others. You usually just need to be there with the bird, rather than working with the bird in order for the bird to function.

They do require attention, but are very quiet, and friendly birds.
